Amanda originally auditioned for the role of queen bee Regina George, but the casting director liked her better as Karen Smith, the spacey yet endearing member of the Plastics. Although she means well, Karen had a tendency to spout some silly one-liners like, “I think I have ESPN” and “You want to do something fun, you want to go to Taco Bell?”

Amanda says Mean Girls “made me known to most people behind the scenes, like the producers and the casting directors. When I would walk into a room for pilot season, they would already know who I was and that was really cool.” Although Mean Girls was considered Amanda’s big break, she was already involved in the industry. Amanda had been acting in soap operas for years. She had big parts in As the World Turns and All My Children and got comfortable in front of a camera as a child model.

Amanda landed her first lead role in Mamma Mia! opposite acting juggernaut, Meryl Streep. Amanda had some theatre background (though she says Les Miz, not Mamma Mia is her favorite musical) but working with a big name like Streep can be intimidating. Amanda was impressed by Streep’s professionalism: “[Meryl] didn’t bring her life dramas on to the set,” she says. “That’s hard to do when you’re younger, because you don’t know how to separate work from play. I had a hard time doing that on [Mamma Mia!], but I brought that experience with me to shoot Jennifer’s Body.”
